The most incredibly frustrating device in the world: The iPhone

I got an iPhone. The 5th Ave. Apple store here in Manhattan has a billion of them, so I walked right in at 9pm Sunday and picked one up in about 10 minutes. Sorry, line waiters :)

I’m really pleased with it. I’ve got some REALLY minor complaints related to the device, including:

1) No visible alert flasher, like the little red light on the blackberry.
2) Why can’t I turn up the volume for alarms and text message tones?
3) Why can’t I pick a ringtone?

That’s all fine. It’s minor stuff — and the device is brilliant. The device, unfortunately, has one major, critical, and unavoidable problem: AT&T.

I’m switching from T-Mobile, and this is a TOTAL joke. Call quality reminds me of making a cell call in the early 90s. The service doesn’t work indoors. Driving down a major avenue in mid-town Manhattan results in a few spots of signal loss. Edge moves at about 5kbps, or worse. This is in the busiest, most connected place in America. I can’t imagine what’s going to happen if I dare leave.

What was Apple thinking? Does Steve Jobs really tolerate not being able to speak on his device as he travels around the world?

Something tells me someone has an unlocked iPhone.

Please, could someone hack this thing?

Odd, here in Atlanta, it's the opposite. T-Mobile has horrible coverage and service -- and everyone uses Cingular/AT&T.

I do think it's ridiculous you can only get the phone through a single provider, especially when it costs so much for the phone in the first place. They should offer discounts if you're switching from another provider -- especially since it won't be long until someone comes out with a wannabe iPhone.

Ok. A few gripes:

Why doesn't Safari have Flash installed?

Why doesn't the Youtube widget search the full Youtube library?

Why does it take at least 3 clicks to make a phone call?

And as you mentioned... ringtones. RING. TONES. I want my MIDI of Sexyback, dammit.

Why does Apple use a ringtone that is not an available ringtone on the iPhone at the end of the iPhone commercials?
