Linksys WPS54G is trash..

Just a little warning about the Linksys WPS54G Print Server product.

It — uh — doesn’t support WPA encryption. Even though it says it does. So it’s more or less totally useless as a wireless print server. I wouldn’t normally post something like this, but it’s just simply unreal that they haven’t pulled these from shelves.

Their fix instead of pulling them? Make the firmware upgrade remove mentions of WPA in the configuration interface.

Enjoy using this on all of your unsecured wireless networks. Just great.

Linksys sucks now.

I had a WRT54G version 1.1 router for many years. Nice little router! Unnecessarily crippled functionality with default firmware, but stable. Updating to the newest *official* firmware bricked my router. (And I mean bricked. Flashing power light forever. I couldn't even short it into default mode. On a good run I'd get one, two pings at boot before it was gone.) I bought a new WRT54G version 5.0. Within 20 minutes, it crashed three times and bricked itself all on its own.

(I ponied up the extra money for a NetGear WG302. It's great.)

I also bought the WPS54G. I'm returning it. Like you say, not only does it not support WPA, but IT CLEARLY STATES IT SUPPORTS "pre-shared-key WPA" ON THE BOX. Why is this still on store shelves this way? The one I bought had firmware three upgrades old, so this is obviously a known issue!

What's worse is, WEP doesn't even seem to work. It won't connect to my NetGear WG302. The reset button seems to be broken as well. I'm trying to restore defaults in order to return it, and the reset button isn't doing anything.

Since it's completely unreasonable to have an unsecured network in New York, every single person purchasing one of these (the linksys print server) is going to have to return it. Totally insane.

The AirPort Express however (which I got next) -- is AWESOME. Works perfectly and supports the printer without requiring some stupid custom driver. WPA worked perfectly.

The WPS54G has a load of problems, but it DOES do WPA. It actually does WPA2 fully. Granted it comes with stale firmware out of the box, a flash will give it WPA2. I've used it for a year with WPA2 functionality.

The WPS54G is not a stable product, but I can say that it does do WPA and WPA2.

I'm not sure about that. At the time of this writing, a firmware flash did not resolve this issue for me or anyone else here.

That's great news if they were able to fix it with the latest firmware.

I got it working with WPA - but the internet printing from an email account only allows for the account name to be 19 characters long - not very useful when your domain name and '@' require 16 of those precious characters :-(

Wow I just got a WPS54G for work -- and it sucks, my reset key won't print out the I.P, it won't reset after following the..hold down for 10 seconds..unplug..replug..hold down for 11 seconds instruction...and after an hour at linksys the only thing they had me do was change my routers SSID. This was a waste of 100 bucks. Now all hells breaking loose at work, and everyone wants to know why there computers arent printing. I guess even if I get it fixed, I can unsecure our very needed secure connection.

Thanks Linksys you POS! oh and thanks for giving me the guy who had me run firmware update 9 times in that one hour.

Not all printers support the printing status when the reset key is pressed. If you printer works with "Generic/text only" driver, this will work though.

Full reset is difficult but possible. Unplug power, hold reset, plug in power (holding reset) and continue to hold reset until all the lights finish flashing up and down (the power and wireless lights come on) -- that's it, just unplug it and it's clean.

Despite having cofigured countless print servers, I can't get this piece of garbage to work... It has never worked correctly on wireless and now it doesn't connect at all

Mine is a version 2 firmware 6050.

I totally regret getting ripped of some $80..."Anything but Linksys"

I think they finally got pulled from shelves they are not on bestbuy or walmarts websites anymore. Bad part is I have a WRT54GS router so I think I have to get a their print server. It used to suck so bad. I went to linksys.com and was about to send complaints because the router kept disconnecting and randomly rebooting then I saw "Firmware upgrade" which it said no where on the box or manual and havnt had a problem with it since January.

This printserver is really crap! I bought it maybe 2,5 years ago and made it run with my HP Deskjet 930C, but I couldn't use all the settings of the printer (e.g. printing on both sides of one page) as I can if I connect it directly to the PC (via USB). I tried to reinstall the printer's driver several times at the printserver, but it never worked the right way...after the printer didn't respond from time to time (randomly) I disconnected it from the network and didn't use it again until today. I thougth about selling the device, but decided to give it a last shot and tried to install the latest firmware (2 years old!)...even this simple task didn't work and now I'm not keen on this crappy thing an and will get rid of it!!

I agree the WPS54G (v2.0, fw 6050) is crap, but still, mine supports WPA and WPA2, but I can select these only via the web interface ( http://..../w_sec.htm ). Unfortunately, this crashes after nearly every click.

After some hours of frustration and after reading this forum I kicked my WPS54G out of the network. What a dissapointment and to my opinion the device does not deserves the Linksys label. As a bandaid I bought a "Belkin Wireless G all in one print server". I have to say that I was printing within 10 minutes after I opened the box. The unit is realy small and performs perfect incl. WPA2 support and fucntions under Vista.

I agree, being technically proficient, I have to say that Linksys WPS54G is really crap! I have never seen a worst product ever, and the company like Cisco Systems trying to palm off trash to ordinary users is unacceptable. No support if you went to there forums, no response to blog responses to issues of other users. I could not agree more... TRASH WPS54G. .
